Birth Statistics

Programs in this part of the system will allow for the generation of tables, graphs and maps of births categorized by year, age group, race, ethnicity, marital status, pregnancy behaviors, and place of residence. Pregnancy behaviors include: prenatal care first trimester, no prenatal care, inadequate prenatal care, smoking during pregnancy, low birth weight, and very low birth weight.

Within MSTAHRS, birth statistics can be summarized using one of three birth outcomes: live births, fetal deaths, and induced terminations (...see definitions below...). Selection of data on all three outcomes, used in creating pregnancy and fertility rates, is available using the pregnancy section of MSTAHRS.

Residence data include transcripts of records of events that occurred in other states to Mississippi residents. Residence data exclude records of events that occurred in Mississippi to residents of other states. Residence assignment for live births and fetal deaths is determined by the usual residence of the mother.

The following definitions are used by the Mississippi Department of Health:

Live Birth - the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of human conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy, which, after such expulsion or extraction, breathes or shows any other evidence of life such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached.

Fetal Death - death prior to complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of human conception, irrespective of the duration of pregnancy; the death is indicated by the fact that after such expulsion or extraction the fetus does not breathe or show any other evidence of life such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite movement of voluntary muscles.

Induced Termination of Pregnancy - the intentional termination of pregnancy with the intention other than to produce a live-born infant or to remove a dead fetus.
